guide to cosmetics expiration date

K-Beauty Guide to Cosmetics Expiration Date

Many people don’t actually know this, but most makeup and skincare products have a specific expiration date. If you don’t toss out your products once passed the expiration date, you could be getting an allergic reaction, a bad acne breakout, or even pink eye. Thankfully, most products from specific categories have more or less the same expiration dates. We’re giving you a k-beauty guide to cosmetics expiration date below. However, keep in mind that they are approximate, and therefore, the date can change depending on the product.

To help you when you receive any Korean cosmetics or  product this ideogram “까지:” (literally “untill”) means the expiration date and this one “제조:” indicates the manufactory date (the day it has been produced).

+ Cream/Essence :

Usually these skincare products last 8 months to 1 year, and in some cases, such as certain body lotions, it can last up to 2 years.

+ Cleansing :

Cleansing products usually last anywhere from 12 months to 18 months.

+ Sheet Mask/Mask Pack :

Sheet masks and other skincare masks can be kept from 12 months to 18 months.

+ Sunscreen :

Due to the ingredients included in most sunscreens, these can only be kept from 6 months to 1 year.

+ Makeup Base / Foundation :

It generally depends on the product and its ingredients. In general, you should toss out your makeup foundation/base/concealer/etc after 6 months to 18 months.

+ Powder :

Powders are usually some of the longest lasting makeup products. They can be kept and used for up to 2 years before you’d need to replace them.

+ Eye Shadows :

Eye shadows that exceed 18 months should be tossed out in order to avoid getting any irritation, allergic reaction or other bacteria in the eyes.

+ Lip stick/Gloss :

Lipsticks generally last 18 months in almost perfect condition. In some cases, they can last even longer without going bad or needing a replacement.

+ Mascara/Eyeliner :

Eye related products like mascara or eyeliner need to be replaced quite often since they’re used so close to the eyes. Therefore, they are recommended to be tossed out after ~ 6 months.

+ Skin/lotion :

As previously mentioned, skin/body lotion can last at least 18 months before you need to worry about it going bad.
