Why are you popping up dear acne?

Ahh, acne. It’s something pretty much everyone deals with at least once in their life, and we all hate it. Whether you’re in your teens or even an adult heading into your 30s or 40s, acne can happen to all of us at any age and period in our lives. But do you know why we get acne and ways we could try to avoid it? Don’t worry, we’ll be breaking down five of the most common reasons why we get acne, and what to do in each one to avoid getting acne ever again!

…..

#1: Hormonal Imbalances

why are poping up dear acneHormones: we all have them. And they also are a very important part of our overall health and are one of the main reasons why we get acne. Which is why, when our hormones are imbalanced, we get a wide range of physical, emotional and mental symptoms–and that more often than not includes acne. The solution? Visit your healthcare professional or OB/GYN to figure out if any of your hormones are out of balance, or if you have any hormone-related condition such as PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) or even thyroid issues, and get treated for them.

#2: Harmful Ingredients

There are some ingredients in some of our favorite skincare or makeup products that could actually be causing all those annoying breakouts! Some of the most common ones recommended to avoid include sodium lauryl sulfate (can be found anywhere from shampoo, body wash, face wash and foundations to mouthwash and toothpaste), parabens (common in makeup, shampoos, moisturizers, shaving gels and spray tan products), and artificial fragrances (mainly in lotions, moisturizers, deodorants and shampoos and conditioners). The best thing you could do is to stay vigilant of the main ingredients included in the products you use and opt for more natural products whenever possible.

.

#3: Stress

We know, we know. Stress can be pretty unavoidable for the majority of us. There are work, family and societal pressures, on top of whatever pressures we might put on ourselves or anything of the like. But sadly, stress–which causes your body to release the cortisol hormone–causes the glands in your skin to produce more oil, making you break out more easily. The cells that produce sebum have receptors for stress hormones, and it can even be more difficult for your body to heal any skin issues when you’re stressed. Of course, you’ll have to try to lower your stress levels in order to reduce your stress-related breakouts. We recommend incorporating some relaxing activities into your daily routine, which can include journaling, reading, pampering yourself with Korean skincare, exercising, or anything else that you personally believe will benefit you.

#4: Unhealthy Diet

Now, we don’t want to literally tell you how to live your life. But multiple studies have pointed out a direct link between an unhealthy diet and an increase in acne breakouts. Some studies even put the blame on specific foods, such as dairy, but take it with a grain of salt. In order to reduce the possibility of diet-related breakouts, make sure to eat more homemade or “real” foods like whole grains, fruits, and veggies often, with healthy proteins, and drink water as often as possible. Do you know the 5 food to eat or to avoid to get rid of acne prone ?

#5: (Lack Of) Sun Protection

For some reason, there’s a misconception in some areas of the world that the sun will help improve acne. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Sun exposure is actually more likely to worsen breakouts in people with already acne-prone skin. Additionally, excess exposure to the sun–especially without proper protection–can even aid in the development of certain types of skin cancers. We recommend wearing sunscreen on your face, neck, and back of the hands every single day–even if you stay indoors since the rays penetrate even the thickest of clouds on a rainy day–as these are the areas most commonly exposed to the sun rays. Even if your skin type is not acne-prone, it’s always a good idea to pop on some sunscreen.
